Why a Preaching Fellowship?

Because, of all the tasks a modern pastor is called on to do, preaching the Word should be paramount.

As Ian Maclaren wrote, “It lies upon the minister of Christ to care for the souls of his people from house to house; to spare no pains that divine service be beautiful and reverent; to afford to the young every useful means of religious culture; to move his congregation unto such good works as lie to their hand: but it is well for him to remember that the most critical and influential event in the religious week is the sermon.”

Like the Missouri River, Baptist preaching has flooded this land for generations. Is there an acre of ground in Missouri on which some Baptist preacher hasn’t trod? With courageous love, Baptist preachers of the past saturated this territory with God’s gospel of salvation by grace through faith in Christ, His Son. Today, as the Baptist preachers of the Blue River-Kansas City Baptist Association, it is our time to continue in the work of preaching God’s holy and redeeming Word.

In the effort to encourage, equip and exhort the pastors of the Blue River-Kansas City Baptist Association in the work of preaching, the Equipping Leaders Ministry Team has organized the Williams-Farmer Preaching Fellowship, named for two Missouri Baptist preachers who served the BR-KC area in the early years of the Association.

Format

On Monday, March 5, senior pastors from churches all over the Association will gather at First Baptist Church, Grandview for a day of worship and learning together.

The day will begin at 9 am with prayer and an opening exhortation. Throughout the day we will sing together, pray together and hear from some of the leading voices in the Association and state on sermon preparation and delivery.

Topics will include “Brothers! Preach the Word!”, “From Preparation to Delivery”, “What Do Preachers Do?” and “Brothers! Preach Christ!”

These themes will be interspersed with prayer and hymns, making for a full day of worship and learning together.

Lunch will be included at no charge by the BR-KC Association.

A.P. Williams

A. P. Williams was born in St. Louis County, Mo., March 13, 1813. Williams was a self-made scholar. He was looked upon by those who knew him best as a second Andrew Fuller. As a result of his wonderful knowledge of the Scriptures, his preaching was pre-eminently scriptural.

Williams gave his whole time to study, preaching, writing and pastoral duties. There were nearly four thousand conversions and baptisms under his preaching.

He was pastor at Lexington, Richmond, St. Joseph, Miami, Bethel, Rehoboth, Good Hope and Glasgow churches.

Jeremiah Farmer

Jeremiah Farmer was born March 26, 1810, in Anderson county, Tennessee. In June, 1837, Farmer moved to Cass County, Missouri.

Soon after coming to Missouri he commenced preaching as a Baptist minister, and for thirty years supplied four churches, each once per month; the distance between the churches being often thirty to forty miles.

The country was new, the congregations poor, and most of the labor was performed without compensation. His labors were blessed and his efforts crowned with eminent success, having baptized about two thousand persons during the lifetime of his ministry.
